A brief lecture on creole and pidgin.

DISCUSSION TOPIC
SOUTH KOREANS STRUGGLE WITH RACE

Before reading the article please consider the following questions:

  1. There are over one million foreign residents in South Korea. Find out what their percentages are in terms of country of origin. This is a website exercise that those of you able to do so in Korean might be able to attempt easier than those of you relying on just English.
  2. Why do you suppose that creating legislation that prosecutes acts deemed racist is being considered by Korean law makers?
  3. A man in the article is quoted as saying, “Our ethnic homogeneity is a blessing,” said one of the critics[of passing legislation that would prosecute those guilty of racist slurs or acts], Lee Sung-bok, a bricklayer who said his job was threatened by migrant workers. “If they keep flooding in, who can guarantee our country won’t be torn apart by ethnic war as in Sri Lanka?” What would you say to this man to convince him that such a law would be needed?
  4. Geographically speaking, what can you say about this in terms of issues related to Korean population in the future? Does it not seem important that this issue be addressed in light of that?
